Irvine, Calif./Scottsdale, Ariz. - (March 27, 2006)
Formula Drift, Inc. and Discount Tire, America's largest tire store,
today announced the initiation of a three-year sponsorship of the
"Need for Speed" Formula Drift Championship. The sponsorship makes
Discount Tire the exclusive tire and wheel retailer of the Need for
Speed Formula Drift Championship, the only North American drift racing
championship.
Discount tire also announced the launch of the Tires.com Triple Crown
competition that will be part of the 2006 Need for Speed Formula Drift
Championship. The 2006 Need for Speed Formula Drift Championship season
begins April 2.
There will be a total of seven rounds of drifting action during the 2006
Need for Speed Formula Drift Championship season. The Triple Crown is
comprised of a series of special events that will be featured at the top
three Need for Speed races. The competing driver with the highest combined
point total for all Triple Crown events earns $5,000 from Discount Tire and
is deemed the Tires.com Triple Crown champion. Additionally, if a single
driver wins all three Triple Crown events, that driver earns an extra $5,000.
The featured Need for Speed Championship events for the Triple Crown will be
held at Road Atlanta in Atlanta, Ga. on May 12, Infineon Raceway in Sonoma,
Calif. on July 8 and Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. on Oct. 14.
"The sponsorship of Need for Speed Formula Drift and the Tires.com Triple Crown
shows our commitment to this ever-growing motorsports phenomenon," said Marcus
Bolland who leads Product Marketing for Discount Tire. "We are excited about
our involvement with drifting and believe that this sponsorship will provide
us even more exposure with this key market of auto enthusiasts."
"A deal like this is something that every promoter dreams of and for Formula
Drift to partner with a top tier company like Discount Tire in our third year
is tremendous for the sport," said Ryan Sage of Formula Drift.
Drifting is a highly-skilled, high-powered motorsport that calls for drivers
to intentionally maneuver their cars into well-executed, controlled sideways
slides at high speeds through a marked course. It is similar to rally racing,
but is done on a closed course and judged on execution and style rather than
who finishes the course fastest.
Drifting started in Japan approximately 10 years ago and is now so popular that
the drivers have become virtual celebrities. In the U.S., the extreme motorsport
has evolved from underground street competitions to a well-organized series of
SCCA Pro Racing sanctioned events and a professional racing circuit that draws
auto-crazed fans to events across the county. |
